Q: How do I audition?
A: Easy! By clicking here. Simply fill out the form and attach a quick audition video.
Q: Does auditioning cost money?
A: No! Auditioning is completely free. If you are considered for the competition and offered a spot, there is a non-refundable $50 registration fee. This fee helps pay for additional prizes in the show, and discourages contestants from dropping out.
Q: I live outside of Moncton, Dieppe & Riverview. Can I still apply?
A: Sure! As long as you can make it to every show, you can apply from anywhere in New Brunswick. The show is held at Kinz Knights Club & Lounge at 841 Main St. Moncton.
Q: I'm used to karaoke. Will I have the words on the screen to sing with?
A: In a majority of cases, you will have the screen as a reference to sing with. It's important to know your song, though, because the judges pay attention to how often you look at the screen!
Q: Can I still apply if I'm a rapper?
A: Yes! Singers of all kinds are eligible to win the grand prize.
Q: Can I provide my own sound tracks?
A: Absolutely! If you have an audio track you'd like to use, simply make organizers aware in advance during the week so we will have time to accommodate you the night of the show. Backup vocals are allowed, however custom audio tracks cannot have any pre-recorded main vocals.
Q: I was already in Slay the Stage. Can I still apply? How will I be judged?
A: Singers who have already competed in Slay the Stage are more than welcome to audition again and may be selected as a contestant again. No singer is considered based on a previous show, and our judges ONLY consider auditions and performances from the current season. It's a clean slate!
Q: Is the winner picked based on votes?
A: No! Slay the Stage prides itself on finding a balance between encouraging audience participation, and avoiding popularity contests. There is no paid vote-to-win system to determine the winner. Audience members will be encouraged to participate in both free & paid voting for various elements, but none of these determine the Grand Prize winner. Only the judges will decide the winner of Slay the Stage.
Q: Can I skip a week if I can't make it during one show?
A: Unfortunately not. If you know you will not be able to make it to one of the shows, we would ask that you avoid auditioning. The show will be held on Saturdays from 6PM to 9PM starting May 25th. We ask that singers arrive 20 minutes early.
Q: Who are the judges?
A: The judges for Slay the Stage include professional vocal coach Kelsey Chevarie, Moncton's Next Superstar winner Caitlin Taylor, karaoke icon Jamie Hache, and musical star Corey Chiasson. There may be guest judges or alternating judges week-to-week.
Q: What are the prizes I can win?
A: The grand prize includes $1000, a single recording contract and the opportunity to open for a mystery artist at the Riverfront Park Pride Festival in Summer 2024. A secondary prize called Moncton's Favourite Singer, will be voted on by the audience each week. The singer with the most votes at the end of the competition will win this cash prize pool. Other prizes may be given throughout the show, at the discretion of Lead Vocal Entertainment and its sponsors.
Q: Will I compete against professional singers?
A: The only singers ineligible to compete in Slay the Stage, are band members that maintain at least one weekly paid gig at the time of the show.
Q: Can I bring my own instruments or equipment?
A: No. We do not allow the use of instruments or custom microphones. This is to ensure an even playing field for all contestants. If you wish to pre-record an instrumental using your own equipment and utilize this as a backing track, this is allowed.
Q: Can I use props, costumes or dance during my performances?
A: Absolutely! We encourage all creative elements that will enhance your performance and draw the audience in. Judges are looking for originality and what will separate you from every other competitor. It's also true that sometimes, less is more. Be creative.
Q: When can I expect to hear back about my audition?
A: We will do our best to reach out to everyone who auditioned. If we get too many, it may not be possible to reach out to everyone. We will get in touch with each potential contestant either by email or social media within a month of the show's start date. The judges also need time to review last-minute auditions before final decisions are made, so this may vary.
